'I'Il never give up': 'Serial entrepreneur,' 59, launches handmade jewelry business in Staten Island Mall - Business Finance

STATEN ISLAND, NY — Lynn Decker, 59, says she’s always been a “terrible quitter.”

In fact, this self-proclaimed “serial entrepreneur,” said “it’s never too late” to start a business or take up a new hobby. And when she upstarts something new she always puts her “all” into making it a success.

That’s why the small business consultant, and owner of Progressive Bookkeeping Solutions LLC, decided to launch another business — one that allows her to showcase her passion for gemstones.

“I studied geology when I returned to college as an adult in 2004, and I fell in love with astronomy and earth sciences. This is why I work with gemstones, because it keeps me connected to the earth and the cosmos, and I am able to stay engaged with the natural world around me,” said Decker, who recently began designing and making beaded jewelry, which she learned by watching YouTube videos in early 2020 during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Once Decker’s friends and family began offering to pay her to create colorful gemstone and beaded jewelry she decided to transform her new hobby into a profitable business.

She officially launched Wired For Love Designs Jewelry Studio LLC in December 2021, and has become a permanent fixture at Lo’Kel-li Vendor Market in the Staten Island Mall.

“I love creating semi-precious gemstone jewelry, and I make and sell bracelets, earrings, necklaces and more using a wide variety of stones. I also curate other jewelry to round out my shop, such as crystal pendants and 18K gold plated necklaces, which I procure from a small base of reputable manufacturers,” she said.

“I just love working with materials from the natural world. And so that’s my main inspiration for my designs. What I design just really comes to me sometimes — it may be while I’m sleeping or during my quiet time,” added Decker.

And starting the business wasn’t a tough task; she’s owned several small ventures.

“I am entrepreneurial by nature, and since this wasn’t my first business venture, I had the experience and confidence to make a go of it. I am very tenacious, and I don’t quit easily, so I do my best to overcome the challenges that come with running a small business. I enjoy my interactions with the public and chat people up comes naturally to me. … I’ll never give up,” she said.

“My favorite part of the job is coming up with new ideas and making the jewelry. Having a creative outlet is therapeutic, and it is a respite from life’s worries and the daily grind,” she said.

ALWAYS TRYING SOMETHING NEW

And Decker is no stranger to taking on new challenges. During the pandemic she joined an all female drumline, having never played the drums before. And at age 53, she took up running, and participated in her first New York City Marathon in 2019.

“You never know if you can do something until you try,” she said. “You have to get over your fear, and you have to turn off those negative voices and just try it. What’s the worst thing that can happen? you file. And if you fail, you pick yourself back up and try something else. I don’t believe in quitting.”
