Keep scrolling to meet a few local companies that are rocking the local business game. 1. Yuva Biosciences, Inc. We all know it—the mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell. But DYK that over time, mitochondria decline in function and contribute to aging? Yuva Biosciences, based right here in Birmingham, has developed topical products to improve mitochondrial health and help provide “youthfulness for life.” Yuva Biosciences utilizes AI to go through thousands of molecules and identify YuvaBio® Y100™ as an ingredient that can help mitigate what scientists refer to as mitochondrial dysfunction, according to a press release. Dr. Keshav K. Singh, Chief Scientific Officer and Co-Founder of Yuva Biosciences, was the first to discover and prove that mitochondrial dysfunction is a key cause of aging for hair and skin and that it can be reversed by restoring mitochondrial function. “With the world’s first and only proven platform to search specifically for new compounds that improve mitochondrial health, Yuva Biosciences is starting with hair and skin aging, with the potential to address other mitochondrial-related issues such as ovarian aging (fertility and menopausal issues), wound care and more.” Greg Schmergel, CEO and Co-founder, Yuva Biosciences Fun fact: VentureSouth, one of the country’s largest angel investment networks, announced that it led a $7.5M seed round for Yuva Biosciences. 2. Lawnlo A couple of summers ago, Billy Scharmann and Seth Taylor were cutting lawns and enjoyed the task and extra money they got from it. One thing led to another, and an app called Lawnlo was born. I spoke with Billy about the birth of Lawnlo, and he explained that while he loved doing yard work, the payment process was always awkward. “A huge pain point for providers is handling or simply getting payments. So, we handle that transaction on the back end. Before the job is done, we make sure the payments are through the payment provider that we use in our app. As soon as we get the green light that the money is there, we can confirm that you completed the job and you get the money immediately.” Billy Scharmann, Co-Founder, Lawnlo This Birmingham-founded and based startup seeks to positively disrupt the lawn care business. They do this through their app, allowing seamless technology to take care of scheduling, payments and your lawn. Lawnlo: Website | Download the app 3. Cahaba Fire Company Ryan King, Co-founder and President of CFC was a firefighter/paramedic for 15 years, which led to the formation of Cahaba Fire Company. Their mission? To identify rescue and emergency equipment needs that aren’t being satisfied and develop new products to fill those needs for first responders to get the job done safer, faster and more reliably. BONUS : CFC took home the Concept Stage prize of $25K at the Alabama Launchpad Cycle 1 Finale Competition in 2023. We’re excited to have a front-row seat to these Birmingham startups.
