Why do you think the organic sector is becoming so important?

The use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides is a very current issue if we take into account the history of humanity. We could consider it an experiment that has provided many advantages in exchange for generating as many problems. After years of use and abuse, we have discovered that these substances are harmful to our health and destroy the ecosystem or the health of the earth. As farmers, we see plots that need years of unproductiveness to eliminate contamination by these agents. Some are so certified that they are not even suitable for non-certified cultivation and will take decades to become so. That is why consumers demand products that are free of these substances, because we know the harmful effects on our health and the environment.

What is your greatest hope for the future of organic?

I believe that we are in a moment of transformation in which opportunities arise. Issues that were not contemplated years ago are now realities. When years ago we proposed an organic farming project in Galicia focused on the cultivation of herbs and tea, the atmosphere was one of disbelief. Now there are several viable organic farming projects developed in Spain and many more are being added. Our hope is in the return to rural areas for the use of the land. Always doing so with a perspective of respect for the environment, aided by technology and generating products with high added value.

What techniques or systems do you use to produce organic?

Orballo was born as an innovation project. Our purpose is to take advantage of the land looking for new crops that generate high added value products. One of the greatest examples is tea, which we have the only plantation in Spain and is also certified organic. While it is true that there are projects in different parts of Europe, the conditions in Galicia are unique and specific. Therefore, as an innovative crop without any precedent in the peninsula, there is no documented experience and any technique or production system is generated through research. As a consequence, a product with unique characteristics is generated whose 2022 harvest we will be delighted for you to try at our Organic Food Iberia stand.
