Change-making Dallas animal group offers free internships to vet students

One of the most game-changing animal organizations in Dallas-Fort Worth has a new program offering hands-on experience to veterinary students.

The program is from The Texas Coalition for Animal Protection (TCAP), a leading nonprofit organization that provides low-cost spay/neuter, vaccine, and wellness services to underserved communities across North Texas.

Called The Veterinary Student Surgical Externship Program, it’s a five-day program that’s open to fourth-year veterinary students, who will work alongside experienced veterinary surgeons in TCAP’s state-of-the-art surgical training facility, where they can gain practical experience in spay and neuter surgeries, vaccinations, basic wellness care, and more.

The program is designed to enhance participants’ technical skills, increase their confidence in the operating room, and deepen their understanding of sterilization surgical techniques.

They’ll also get access to educational resources, engage in lectures and discussions surrounding animal welfare topics, participate in case discussions, and learn from elite instructors specializing in HQHV community animal care.

Beyond giving the next generation of veterinary doctors experience, the goal is also to inspire them to take an interest in shelter medicine.

TCAP has eight North Texas locations: Allen, Arlington, Burleson, Denton, Fort Worth, Garland, Hurst, and Weatherford.

They also have more than 40 offsite travel locations, where they partner with local cities and shelters who allow TCAP to come in and perform low-cost sterilizations at their facility. Pet owners drop off their pets at these locations just as they would at a vet or TCAP clinic. The sterilization is performed on-site, and pets go home the same afternoon.

These efforts have helped TCAP make a major contribution to reducing the pet overpopulation issue plaguing Texas.

TCAP director of operations Katelyn McGuire says in a statement that the externship program embodies their mission to end pet overpopulation and improve community animal welfare.

“By providing aspiring veterinarians with an immersive, hands-on surgical experience, we empower them to positively impact animal health and welfare in our community,” McGuire says.

Information about the Veterinary Student Surgical Externship Program, including application details and requirements, is on the TCAP website at texasforthem.org/veterinary-externship/.

A New York-based med spa has arrived with HydraFacials, Photo Facials, and EmSculpting to help Dallas through the sweaty, sunburned, bikini-wearing month of July. Ever/Body, a boutique cosmetic dermatology center, opened the doors to its very first Texas location, in Preston Hollow, on Friday, July 30.

The new Dallas center – at 10720 Preston Rd. – will be the flagship location in Texas, with several more to follow in the greater Dallas area, they say.

“Ever/Body seeks to empower our clients with treatments, information, and tools to help them make informed decisions about their skin, body, and hair care,” a release says. “They believe that there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to cosmetic dermatology. Beauty is multifaceted and we celebrate each person’s unique journey.”

Services include wrinkle relaxers, dermal filler, laser facials, Morpheus8 Microneedling, body sculpting, plasma injections, laser hair removal, and hair revitalization. They focus on powerful but minimally invasive treatments that can be completed in an hour or less and paired with a product regimen, they say.

Select brand names include Kybella (non-surgical fat reduction under the chin, starting at $595); Keravive (scalp and hair follicle treatment, starting at $415); VI Peel (medium-depth chemical peel, starting at $425); TruSculpt ID (non-surgical body treatment that uses radiofrequency energy to permanently reduce fat, starting at $950), and more.

The Dallas Ever/Body team is led by Dr. Rawn Bosley, a double board-certified dermatologist and fellowship-trained dermatologic surgeon, who will see patients and also serve as the supervising physician of the center.

“The team seeks to understand the clients’ needs from their perspective and foster an environment that is warm, accepting, and welcoming,” the release says.

Ever/Body was founded in New York City in 2018 and now also has locations in Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia, and two coming soon to Chicago.

They’re currently offering a 20-percent-off special for summer; information here.

The Dallas location’s hours are 10 am-8 pm Monday-Sunday. Call 917-781-2352 or visit the website for more information or to book appointments.
