Demand for PlayStation Portal Sky High in Japan, Pre-Orders Reportedly Sold Out | Push Square

The PlayStation Portal has been met with raised eyebrows and shrugged shoulders among enthusiasts in the West, but it seems as though Japan is very much onboard with the Remote Play handheld. Pre-orders for the device recently went live at various retailers, and over in Sony’s homeland, demand is reportedly high; PS Portal is sold out basically everywhere.

Reports are coming in from social media that all online shops in the country are fresh out of Portal pre-orders. Genki says they sold out in about 12 hours:

PS Portal is a device launching this November that essentially lets you play your PS5 away from the TV via Remote Play. So long as your console and your Portal have access to WiFi, you can remotely connect to your PS5 and play whatever you like. Obviously it’s reliant on the speed of the connection, but as we know, Japan’s gaming tastes lean towards portable play, so it makes a lot of sense for this to be selling well over there.

Unfortunately we don’t know any numbers, and as Genki points out, it’s possible a portion of these pre-orders have gone to scalpers. However, given Japan’s aforementioned enthusiasm for handheld games, it remains an encouraging sign that the device has sold out across the board.

In the US and UK, it’s a slightly different story. Amazon US seems to have sold out at the time of writing, but a number of other retailers in the US and UK seem to still have some pre-orders left.

Having grown up alongside PlayStation, Stephen has developed an eclectic taste in video games and a wide knowledge of the medium, from small indie gems to the biggest AAA blockbusters. Ever hopeful that the Burnout series makes a miraculous return.

Actually that was me. I bought all of them so I could scalp on Ebay.

Wow, was not expecting that! So, perhaps it’s a product that will do really well in markets other than Western? I love Playstation, but I absolutely do not get the appeal of this device.

Finally, some positive news for a change. If this could lead to a psp2/vita 2 or something, I’m all for it.

People really will buy anything as long as it has the PS logo on it.

Seriosuly, what is the appeal of this? It is an expensive device considering all it can do is stream games from your PS5, which is already possible on devices most people already own. It has a few other limitations as well, i.e. lack of Bluetooth support. I just don’t get this at all.

I will be buying one myself in November, will be useful when the misses has the TV so I can continue playing.

@lightningbolt79 And that’s ok. It’s not for you. Others including myself will find great value in this.

I hope people in Japan know it’s required to own a PS5 for it to work. Unless Sony for the last minute puts in an android os with microsd card support

But but but…it’s useless, no one wants it!

Gotta love people who have no use case for it and can’t look past their own.

@PlayStationGamer3919 This. I wonder how many of those buyers don’t know that you also need a PS5 to go with it.

@Angelus3K which is perfectly ok. I know some people will be perfectly happy to pay for this overpriced product.

I personally just hate the direction Playstation is going in at the moment. Releasing expensive hardware, increasing the cost of the PS Plus subscription, and not telling us what games they’ve got coming.

I love my PS5 and am loving playing the games I’ve got, but the future of PS is not a future I’m hyped about.

@lightningbolt79 actually, that couldn’t be further from the case. Most playstation hardware other than home consoles haven’t had much success compared to their competitors. For example, unlike Nintendo, they can’t release a retro console with a few games and print money.

@lightningbolt79 ease of use and dont need your phone tied up. Also that isn’t handheld at all. Can certainly see why it’s doing well in Japan as they all play on their commutes Apparently the remote play works better too as its a Sony programmed device and not a one size fits all like a phone or tablet.

@naruball it seems now, it is the case. A lot of PS branded stuff has sold extremely well recently.

@Andy22385 hope they have good Wi-Fi on their commutes.

I’ll be all over this when I get it. Sure it’s a luxury accessory, but gaming is a luxury hobby as it is.
Will probably wait for a revised model to come out first though, as this will be new ground for Sony.

I remember ps5 from japan is cheaper compared to other region so people import them and sold them elsewhere. Either that or most people thought ps portal is normal portable with android which has good cpu for playing old ps games without streaming.
