The Arkansas
Arts Council, an agency of the Division of Arkansas
Heritage, advances and empowers the arts by providing services and
funding for
programming that encourages and assists literary, performing
and visual artists in achieving standards of professional excellence. The Arkansas Arts Council also provides technical and financial
assistance to Arkansas arts organizations and other providers of
cultural and educational
programs.
The Arkansas Historic Preservation Program identifies, evaluates, registers, and preserves the state’s historic and cultural resources and seeks to instill a preservation ethic in future generations of Arkansans. The agency also houses the Main Street Arkansas program, which works with local communities to revitalize downtown commercial areas.
Since 1973, the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission (ANHC) has been working to conserve Arkansas’s natural landscape through various field surveys. These surveys and research projects
have provided a wealth of information on more than 900 rare
species that can be used to evaluate the relative imperilment of native
species
and shared for environmental planning purposes. Our goal is
to provide an introduction to the natural treasures that are the heritage of every citizen in Arkansas.
With more than 200 years of Arkansas history available at the Arkansas State Archives,we
are here to preserve and make history available to you. Here, you can
find research sources, search historical records and browse archival
collections.
Arkansas is as unique and varied as the people who call it home. Our history and heritage is woven throughout the state in the rich colors, patterns and textures found in our arts, our architecture, our museums and even our landscape. This colorful assortment is all a part of the Division of Arkansas Heritage. Each of our museums and agencies work to further our mission.
The Delta Cultural Center is a museum and educational complex that tells
the story of a land and its people, capturing what makes the Arkansas
Delta region unique. It is the mission of the Delta Cultural Center to
preserve, interpret and present the cultural heritage of this legendary
27-county area.
Historic Arkansas Museum, sometimes called HAM, is a state
history museum in downtown Little Rock, Arkansas.
The museum was created as part of the Arkansas Territorial Capitol
Restoration Commission, by Act 388 of the 1939 Arkansas General
Assembly.
The Mosaic Templars Cultural Center invites you to explore Arkansas’s
African American history, life, and culture in our new, state-of-the-art
museum. Walk down Ninth Street and learn about black-owned businesses, explore the legacy
of the Mosaic Templars of America,
and learn
more about black legislators in the 1890s. Listen to
firsthand accounts of life in the segregated South from the people who
lived the experience.
Visit the Third Floor Auditorium and explore the Arkansas
Black Hall of Fame.
The Old State House Museum is the original state capitol of Arkansas.
Since 1833, when construction began, the building and its grounds have
witnessed
many of the most important events in Arkansas history. The
Old State House has hosted the admission of Arkansas to the Union, a
fatal knife
fight between two sitting legislators, the Arkansas vote to
secede from the United States and join the Confederacy, pioneering
medical research
into hookworm and malaria, and two acceptance speeches by
the president of the United States.
