Chubby Baker donuts now available in Utah County, and more local business updates

If you live in Utah County and are craving a filled doughnut from Chubby Baker, you don’t have to drive all the way to 900 South in Salt Lake City to get one.

On Sept. 1, the Asian American bakery held a soft opening for its new Orem location, just north of Trader Joe’s at 1167 S. State St.

Chubby Baker’s filled glazed confections come in Asian-inspired flavors like passion fruit cream cheese, ube cream, hot guava and coconut cream. Nonfilled ring doughnut options include brown butter, blueberry lavender and more.

There are plenty of drink options to go with your doughnut(s), including coffee, teas, fruit fizzes, matcha and Korean strawberry milk.

Chubby Baker’s Orem location is open from Tuesday through Thursday from noon to 9 p.m.; from noon to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday; and from noon to 7 p.m. on Sunday. Maven District to hold annual block party

On Sept. 30, the Maven District will be holding its annual block party, featuring local vendors, food trucks, live music, giveaways, arts & crafts and interactive booths.

The free, pet-friendly and kid-friendly event will be happening along 900 South between 200 East and Edison Street, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

More than 70 vendors will have booths at the event, and all of the Maven District storefronts will be open. These vendors and small businesses will be selling vintage goods, home decor, art prints, hand pies, kombucha, ceramics, candles and more. Some will be offering services such as piercings, permanent jewelry, free bang trims and tarot card readings.

Spice on 9th opens

Spice on 9th is a new cafe and market that highlights the work of entrepreneurs participating in the Spice Kitchen Incubator, an organization that helps refugees and disadvantaged people launch their own food businesses.

Located at Artspace Greenery in Salt Lake City’s Granary District, Spice on 9th offers world cuisines on a weekly rotating basis. The cafe had its grand opening on Aug. 25, and featured food from Halab’s Jasmine Kitchen its first week.

“We are thrilled to open Spice on 9th, to share the food, the culture, and the stories of our neighbors,” said Emily Park, Spice Kitchen Incubator program manager.

Entrepreneurs will also be selling packaged food products, coffee drinks and grab-and-go items, as well as produce grown by refugee farmers participating in the International Rescue Committee’s New Roots program.

300 West liquor and wine store welcomes end of construction

After years of road construction mostly blocked access to the state liquor and wine store at about 300 West and 1700 South in Salt Lake City, the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Services celebrated the end of the project with a grand reopening event of the retail location.

DABS Executive Director Tiffany Clason said in a news release that the 300 West construction impacted access to the store at 280 W. Harris Ave. for employees, customers, and business owners that get products for their establishments there.

The grand reopening on Aug. 31 included wine education booths throughout the store — a first for the department — covering French, Italian, South African and sparkling wines.
