Grand Chief Stewart Phillip Re-elected President of UBCIC – Indigenous Business & Finance Today | Indigenous Business & Finance Today

Press Release

(xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil Waututh)/Vancouver, B.C. – September 15, 2022) Grand Chief Stewart Phillip has been re-elected by acclamation to his ninth consecutive three-year term as President of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs (UBCIC), a position he has served for the past twenty-four years.

The UBCIC celebrates Grand Chief Stewart Phillip on his re-election and acknowledges his perseverance, leadership and determination in advancing Title and Rights. Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, along with his presidency and previously serving twenty-four years on the Penticton Indian Band Council, has committed to strengthening and protecting the interest, Title and Rights of Indigenous People provincially and beyond. He has taken a lifelong role in working tirelessly to ensure that the actions of all levels of government are directed by the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls 2S+ Calls for Justice, including advocating for crucial movements and campaigns that advance Indigenous Title and Rights, which continues to become increasingly critical.

“I am deeply grateful for the ongoing support and confidence of the UBCIC Chiefs Council,” stated Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, UBCIC President. “There is more work to do than ever on the implementation of our inherent and constitutionally protected Title and Rights. I am looking forward to the continued direction and wisdom of the UBCIC Chiefs Council as we continue to advocate for equity, address the climate emergency, identify legislative priorities for alignment with the UN Declaration, and as we struggle to emerge from the pervasive colonial hangover that permeates so many aspects of our lives including recovering from the genocidal so-called Indian Residential School system and the ongoing scoops of our children. I am honoured to be able to carry out this critical work as a member of the UBCIC Executive.”
