Minecraft's Switch Version Earns More Revenue Than Xbox And PlayStation | Nintendo Life

Minecraft is still insanely popular and has been a huge form of revenue for Microsoft since its acquisition of Mojang.

While PC and mobile is still seemingly the most popular way to play the game, during the final part of the ‘Microsoft v FTC’ hearing today, it’s been revealed Nintendo’s platform is actually the biggest revenue driver for Microsoft between the big three.

In order, Nintendo’s Switch platform is “twice as big as PlayStation (or four times as big as Xbox)”. Mobile and PC figures weren’t revealed, but apparently, they’re “very large”. In general, Minecraft is apparently “one of the most profitable, if not the most profitable, IP” Microsoft owns, and is a “significant” revenue driver for the tech giant.

Considering the Nintendo Switch has now shifted over 125 million units as of March 2023, it’s not necessarily that surprising to hear Minecraft is possibly well out in front on this platform. Obviously, the Switch also has the advantage of being a hybrid system, so players can take Minecraft on the go. Minecraft has also previously been released on Nintendo’s 3DS and Wii U.

Unfortunately, it’s not always been smooth sailing for Minecraft players on Switch, with this particular version sometimes falling short of the experience on other consoles. Thankfully, it still gets the latest patches, with the most recent one being the Trails & Tails update earlier this month.

Haven’t played Minecraft in a while, should go back in the mine, and get my pickaxe swinging from side to side.

No wonder Microsoft has been wanting to put their games on Nintendo platforms.

If your crafty and you know it, put your pickaxe in the air!

Even if I own a game on a console, I somtimes also get it on the switch, I don’t know it’s just really convenient, I can take it anywhere I want, and play it anywhere, it’s cool!

I would imagine a lot of multiplatform releases are most profitable on the Switch.

It’s funny how much better Microsoft’s games sell on Switch than their native platforms. I’m pretty sure the same thing happened for Cuphead and Ori too.

I remember when Mojang sold Minecraft – people thought the number was way too much. I bet MS has made so much, much more than they paid for the game.

I mean… who buys a PS5 to play Minecraft? Switch is less expensive, more flexible, completely fine power-wise for Minecraft, and on average more oriented towards younger children who–as an age group–play more Minecraft.

Microsoft of course also owns Windows and I’m sure they sell Plenty of Minecraft there even if the game is less popular on their console.

In other news, water is wet.
This should come as no surprise. Massively popular game, massively popular system, $$. I Wish they’d consider optimizing the game good on switch since it sells so much..

It’s like a top 5 best seller every week for not much reason. I’m one of the rare breeds of gamer that never played it but some of the DLC and online modes looked fun.

Makes sense to me. Personally, I prefer longer play sessions on a handheld. So a game like Minecraft, where you can just build or explore for hours, is a lot more enjoyable in handheld mode. Same for RPGs.

The Mario stuff in Minecraft is also pretty fun, though. I’m sure that certainly helps it’s sales.

Oh really??? If Minecraft is so popular then, where’s Minecraft 2???

That’s wild, given the state this game plays in on switch. It could just suffer for split-screen multiplayer since that’s what I’ve seen of the game, but still.

@Hero-of-WiiU minecraft is like nothing else out there. I don’t include it on any of my favorite game lists since it’s so big at this point it’s less of a game and more of an experience, a platform. It really is something special. If you ever do choose to give it a try, play it on PC (more control options, better performance and mod support), go with java edition (bedrock has a silly in-game currency and shop that’s just plain useless), and go in without expecting a traditional experience. You get to make your own fun, and as reflected in it’s sales, it works really damn well.
