PlayStation Portal won’t be in competition with Switch as Sony says it’s a “different proposition”

Sony is launching its portable PlayStation Portal device next month, and all eyes will be on it to see whether it turns out to be a huge success for Sony or a bit of a damp squib. British news publication, the BBC, caught up with Sony boss Eric Lempel to talk about the device, which allows PlayStation 5 owners to stream their game library to the handheld via an internet connection. Mr. Lempel denies that it will be going head to head with Nintendo’s Switch and Valve’s Steam Deck, as he claims the PlayStation Portal is a different proposition. Lempel also confirmed to the site that the PlayStation Portal can be used while outside the home, as long as the internet signal is strong enough. The device won’t work with their cloud gaming service.

Oh great, i can see the comments now for this article “blah blah blah, this is a Nintendo fourm im a whinny fratboy why are you posting about PlayStation on a Nintendo fourm”

And then theres you, commenting about comments that havent even been made yet. Says a lot.

What a stupid thing to report on, anyway. Whoever is making this comparison needs to do a little bit more research, as it reveals an embarrassing amount of ignorance.

These are not the same category device. The PlayStation Portal REQUIRES a PS5 to function. It’s an accessory to another device, whereas the Switch is a standalone device.

The same exact expected comments from you, every single damn time. Aren’t you tired?

spaceman256 already said it.
You’re a complete moron, @Nikki_boagreis, for being sooo prematurly self biased, that you kinda nullify your own comment to begin with!
Good luck with that, mate 😀

Also is a $hitty product. Despite being a PS5 related products, switch is still capable of much more than it. Another reason it can’t compete lol

I have to admit I hardly ever play my ps5, but this will def make me play it more.
I always play switch, but always in handheld mode, so il def give this a try. I’m not bothered about how it works portably on the move, it’s mainly so I can play it sat in my living room whilst everyone else watches tv, it’s a bit of a rip off that u can’t connect your own earphones apart from Sony link, that’s a bit of a bad move, but generally I think it’s a pretty good idea as the streaming to other devices has always been a bit poor.

Lol I love their wording on this on how it won’t be direct competition. I remember the same thing with PSMove after the Wii Era, PSVita play type thing with the Wii U GamePad and hell even the Sony Smash Bros 😂. I love it haha

PlayStation portal? Never heard of never. I don’t think it can outmatch the Switch hardware system.

It’s really not, one streams games the other actually plays it. This seems like one of the many peripherals that Sony gives up on and just half way kills it without telling anyone.

Sony said this because it’s not made to compete with the switch. It’s meant to be a cheaper more readily available version of a playstation, and able to walk around the home, relax etc from anywhere. They never said it was a psp. You are all disappointing yourselves and contradicting everything you say about this hardware. Think about adaptability and 200 vs 400+ for a new system upstairs or down. Siblings and family etc. Much easier to grab a Portal instead of hauling a PS5 upstairs and down. Not to mention if you have properly configured wi-fi you can kick back on the deck outside.
Nobody said you had to buy it or like it. Too muxh toxic behavior in social media today. I never create a response in anything this is the first in over 20 years (highschool).

Except it’s not a cheaper readily version of a PlayStation. This is literally a shell that will only stream from your PS5. If you don’t own a PS5, it does nothing. I get your point about the community, but Sony is right, they aren’t competing with Nintendo or Valve because, again, this thing is useless without a PS5.

Well it was kind of a stupid question, i don’t think anyone with half a brain considered it to be a competitor. It’s literally an accessory for the PS5, it can’t function without one.
