Canada’s current account balance (on a seasonally adjusted basis) recorded a deficit of $11.1 billion in the third quarter, following surpluses in the first two quarters of 2022. Farm income, 2021 (revised data)

Realized net income for Canadian farmers rose 49.8% to $13.7 billion in 2021, as strong growth in receipts offset higher expenses. This increase followed a 79.1% gain in 2020 and a 5.1% rise in 2019. Excluding cannabis, realized net income in 2021 was up 49.6% to $14.0 billion.

Farm cash receipts, January to September 2022

Farm cash receipts for Canadian farmers totalled $66.7 billion over the first three quarters of 2022, up 13.7% (+$8.0 billion) from the same period in 2021 as a result of higher receipts for crops, livestock, and payments.

Monthly estimates of business openings and closures, August 2022

In August 2022, the number of active businesses (-0.3%; -2,529) dropped for the second consecutive month. This decline is consistent with the variation in employment as measured in the Labour Force Survey, which posted slight contractions in both July and August 2022. The decline in the number of active businesses was mainly driven by the increase in the business closure rate from 4.6% in July to 4.9% in August. The business opening rate (4.4%) slightly declined, driven by the 0.1 percentage point decrease of the reopening rate whereas the entry held steady at 1.8%.
