From here, a  Kickstarter campaign was launched and with community support they started their first residential food scrap collection service right here in Buffalo. The idea is to divert these food scraps from the landfill, recycle them and turn them into a rich, nutrient dense natural fertilizer to be used by local farmers and gardeners!

Ten years later, Farmer Pirates Compost now operates as a Worker-Owned Cooperative, refining their services, increasing their efficiency and expanding their service area. Together with their residential, commercial and drop off members they are able to divert approximately 10 TONS of food scraps per week from the landfill locally right here in Western New York! Impressive right?

Neighborhood Drop-Off Program

If you don’t have the space for an in-home composting set up, this program is for you! Right now, Farmer Pirates Compost offers various neighborhood drop-off locations you can take advantage of. They include locations in Kenmore, East Aurora, North Tonawanda, and Pendleton. (But new locations are being added all the time!) 

Choose the one that’s most convenient for you, sign up for your membership online, and you’ll be sent all of the need-to-know information and tips for collecting food scraps at home. 

Whenever you’re ready to drop off your food scraps, simply head to your neighborhood drop-off bin and empty your container. The Compost Crew takes it from there and ensures your scraps are turned into compost. It’s that simple!

New Programs On the Way

Farmer Pirates Compost also has an exciting new project in the works. They have been awarded the contract to partner with the City of Buffalo to provide our city’s first ever curbside composting pilot program, or “Scrap It, Curbside!”.
