Increased liquor liability insurance continues hurting small business across SC

Increased liquor liability insurance continues hurting small business across SC (WIS) – Small businesses across South Carolina continue to feel the burden financially from price hikes on their liquor liability licenses, even forcing some in the Midlands to close. Many citizens are now calling on lawmakers for change. “This is about more than bars, restaurants, and music venues,” said Sheila Merck, Director of Operations & Communications at SC Venue Crisis. “This is about South Carolina’s economy.” Merck said she has heard from dozens of businesses across the state via Facebook and Instagram about this issue. She said locally, businesses like New Brookland Tavern and WECO Bottle and Biergarten have had major increases in their insurance. “It’s every single business in South Carolina that’s being affected by liability insurance, and our legislators can do something about it,” Merck said. With businesses like Henry’s in Cayce announcing their closure on Facebook over the weekend of Jan. 7, Merck explained how this shows the price increase hurting the economy. “We have multiple people in the legislation that understand this in an issue,” Merck said, “If it’s not taken care of soon, our state is really going to be in a bad situation financially.” SC Venue Crisis plans to hold a Tort Reform Rally outside the statehouse in support of small businesses impacted by the insurance increases. While the rally was initially scheduled for Wednesday, January 9th, it was postponed due to the weather. Notice a spelling or grammar error in this article? Click or tap here to report it.
